Current Artist in Residence:
Wander Matos
Artist Biography
Born in Barahona, Dominican Republic, Wander Matos is the second of four siblings, raised by his parents, Carmen Martínez and Antonio Matos. From an early age, he showed a natural talent for drawing, which continued to develop when he moved to Santo Domingo to live with his aunt. There, his passion for art became even more evident, with drawing emerging as one of his strongest skills.
At 20, Matos pursued formal art studies at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. He later earned a scholarship to the prestigious Altos de Chavón School of Design, where he graduated with honors. Through cultural exchange programs, he expanded his education at the National School of Visual Arts (ENAP) in Mexico City.
Matos has worked extensively as a freelance artist, creating props and artwork for major Dominican companies, including Cerveza Nacional Dominicana, Embotelladora Nacional (Coca-Cola), Brugal & Co., Barceló & Co., Banco BHD, Banco León, and Asociación Popular. He has also participated in biennials and received numerous awards in painting competitions, including inter-school contests and poster design selections.
My work is a reflection of emotions and memories, an ongoing exploration of identity deeply rooted in everyday experiences. Through painting, these experiences take form, transforming into creative expressions that emerge from an intense interaction with the material itself.
